How can Women Into the Network help me ... I'm from outside the UK

Although Women Into the Network’s prime focus is the North East of England, we have worked nationally & internationally on a number of projects.  WIN has spun-out to other areas of the UK including Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cambridgeshire in partnership with the Rural Women’s Network who are experts in supporting women in rural areas.

We have also taken the concept of WIN and been involved in projects in Slovenia, Croatia, Turkey and South Africa, delivering workshops and offering best practice advice.

The main focus of WIN is women’s enterprise development & gender related programmes.  Although we know that women around the world have different problems when starting up in business, many barriers are common the world over:

• Accessing finance
• Childcare and caring responsibilities
• Low self esteem and lack of confidence
• Dual role and domestic responsibilities
• Lack of socialisation to entrepreneurship in their homes, schools, and society
• Exclusion from traditional business networks and lack access to information 
• Discriminatory attitudes of lenders, gender stereotypes and expectations that label women entrepreneurs as ‘dabblers’ ‘hobbyists’ or merely lifestyle business owners.

Some of these barriers will be hard to overcome completely.  However, women’s entrepreneurship is on the increase in the UK (overtaking France, Germany, Italy and Japan) and that’s mainly due to networks such as WIN, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM report).  We can learn a great deal from working with other countries and sharing our experiences.
